ABOUT

LOST follows the story of a girl named Jane as she struggles through an eating disorder. What makes this film so interesting is the possibility of the unknown, as the audience does not know what is necessarily wrong with Jane. The symptoms that are shown on the screen could be in relation to any disorder or disease, leaving the audience confused and having the realization that diagnosing an eating disorder is much more complicated than one could expect.

We see Jane battling with something, but it is questioned what it is as she never directly tells us what is wrong. We got through harsh colour changes, which emphasizes what Jane is dealing with is a major problem in her everyday life. The music that is chosen is a lot of eerie room tone, along with an uncomfortable song played on the piano, which adds to the darkness of the film. The stark colour change, music choice, and vulnerability that is seen through Jane gives the audience an uncomfortable “bystander” feeling.

The story has no timeline, just short flickers and instances where we see Jane in an agitated, unhealthy state. Short voice overs are added and it is clear at the end of the film that Jane has no idea what she has become, as she cannot answer her own questions, leaving that for the audience to decide what she is. Her dancing is shown to show how her mental illness has made her lose balance of her life and herself as a human. The dancing is a representation of losing ones balance, but in hopes that one can regain their balance and take control eventually.
