CONTEXT

The Dan Studio Series, also known as DSS, formerly known as the Drama Studio Series, is a theatre company within Queen's University that focuses on the inclusivity of students through numerous faculties in showing their plays, along with the creative team, production team, and casts being students. There are two instalments a year, with four plays per instalment. In September 2017, DSS revealed a new platform on how their instalments will be approached through the 2017-2018 year. With the Music Department and Drama Department becoming The Dan School of Drama and Music, DSS wanted to note such change between both departments. To show this change, DSS decided to implement other performative art forms in their instalments such as music and dance.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this research project is to look at the overall changes of DSS with their first new platform instalment, DSS: Embrace. This project hopes to compare and contrast this new instalment from previous instalments DSS has had in the past with the new performative art aspects added into Embrace.

This research project will also be using information from The Urban Bush Women: Finding Shelter in the Utopian Ensemble to compare and contrast the use of dance and music in The Urban Bush Women with DSS: Embrace. Has DSS used a similar concept to The Urban Bush Women? If not, should they in order to enhance their experience?

RESEARCH QUESTION

Has the altered performance content of Dan Studio Series: Embrace affected the experience of the producer, performer, and audience member? If so, was the experience improved, or diminished in comparison to past Dan Studio Series shows? How has the overall identity of theatre in these contexts changed?
